I’m sure it will come as no surprise that I am a fan of the ladies. One of the things I look for in books is really great female characters; whether they’re strong or flawed or annoying, I don’t care as long as they are real and well-written. Some of my favourite book-ladies feel more like friends than characters, or in my head at least we’re all best friends. That’s the sign of a really great character for me—if I want to be her friend in real life, and this applies to unlikable characters as well because I like interesting people even if they’re mean/evil (not sure we’d have to be good friends, just grab a drink once or twice maybe just for the conversations).
In honour of my love of the ladies, I’m introducing a new feature on the blog where I can gush about my favourite literary ladies and pretend we’re all BFF’s. So, without any further ado, it’s time for some girl talk! And what kind of girl talk would it be without a drink?
Today I'm grabbing a drink with one of the most badass ladies I've read in a long time - the artist formerly known as Celaena Sardothien*. Yes, that's right Adarlan's most accomplished assassin, sometimes known as Elentiya or Fireheart.
'She was fire, and light, and ash, and embers.'
What we’re drinking
Gimlets! I am a big gin drinker, but usually default to the habitual G&T (with an extra lime). I have a feeling Celaena would be bored with a plain old G&T so we're kicking things up a notch and going for something from a more glamorous era. Of course the word 'gimlet' is also used to mean sharp or piercing, which is appropriate given Celaena's proficiency with all things sharp and piercing.
What we’re chatting about
There is no arguing with the fact that Celaena Sardothien is one impressive boss lady. She was the most feared assassin in Adarlan before being sent to the brutal labour camp Endovier. Now that she's free and has had quite a few adventures, including coming to love her true self, I know she'll have plenty of amazing stories. Sarah J. Maas' has said of Celaena that her 'arrogance and fierceness' and part of what makes Celaena such a fascinating and admirable woman as she's 'a woman who never once said sorry for being talented and determined and utterly in love with herself'. And while that confidence and determination has never faded through all of her struggles, I know Celaena has undergone quite a transformation. I'd love to hear all about her personal journey, how she came to love her true self, and how she's adapting to her new life (with some intense responsibility).
Of course I'd also be interested in hearing some gossip. A gin cocktail is incomplete without a generous dash of gossip. I'll want all the juicy details about the men (and Fae) in her life. But I'd also like to chat to her about her female friends. Making new friends can be hard and I'd love to hear about her experience with learning to open herself to new people and finding a support system to help her through tough times.
Oh and I know she loves to read so we'd probably end up gabbing about books for hours and hours and hours.
What would you most like to chat about with Celaena?
* This is a non-spoiler post and as such I'm using Celaena instead of Aelin. Of course she now prefers to go by Aelin and leave Celaena in the past, but for the sake of avoiding spoilers I've made an exception here.
